Obedience Training your Dog

Obedience training your dog will honestly make your life and your pet’s life much happier. You see, dogs naturally run in packs. You have to understand this as a dog owner. This means that your dog will instinctively look for his place in the pack a.k.a, your family. From day one, you have to help him find that place or he may try to place himself at the head of the pack. Then discipline problems could get out of control.

Whether you have a brand new puppy or you have adopted an adult dog, obedience training your dog is the way to go. Get online, look in the Yellow Pages, check the newspaper or ask around for information about obedience training your dog. Depending on your town, you should be able to find these classes all over the place.

Obedience training does not guarantee that you will have the happiest, most compliant dog on the planet. But, it does guarantee that you will build a solid foundation for you and your dog to grow on. Animals need boundaries and regular people do not generally have the skills to teach their dog where those boundaries lie. And it may not be that you don’t have the skills, but maybe you just don’t have the time.

Enter obedience classes. Dogs are animals and animals do not behave like people. Without training and redirection, dogs are going to tear up your shoes, urinate in the house, tear up the trash, bite, bark and growl. This is all in their nature. If you want to domesticate your animal, then obedience training your dog is the way to go.

You can begin with a basic obedience class and move on from there if needed. There are a couple basic things to expect from these classes. All trainers have different methods so it is hard to say which one they will use. But, positive reinforcement has definitely taken the place of negative reinforcement. Also, these are the basic commands: come, sit, stay, lie down, go to bed, leave it or drop it, take it, heel and don’t bite.

As I mentioned before, this type of training for your dog does not guarantee a perfect dog. You have to carry on the techniques you learned inside your home. Obedience training your dog is not meant for miracles but it is definitely a wonderful step in the right direction for you and your dog.
