1. The Facts:

   First check out whether your Yorkie has a soft coat or the silky coat and buy products suited for that. Then gather all the supplies before you embark on a grooming routine. There is a regular pre-bath routine to be followed before proper shampooing and all this has to be done at least once a week to keep your dog in ship-shape.

2. Supplies:

   You'll need a good dog shampoo for the coat of your dog and the water in your area. Conditioner should also be bought based on the coat type. A pin brush is one of the most essential tools you'll need. Nail clippers and Wahl clippers for hair around the ears. Ear powder will make your task much easier. Scissors for hair clipping around feet and anal area are a must. Latex bands and bows can be added to make your dog a stunner. But these are not essential.

3. What to Do:

   Go through the coat to remove snarls and mats with the help of the pin brush. Then brush the teeth as Yorkies are quite prone to tartar. Check the ears for infection. Add ample powder and trim the hair inside and for outside use Wahl clippers. Then go to the feet and use nail clippers for toe nails and scissors for hair. Then comes bath time, wet the coat and rinse with shampoo. Wash and apply light conditioner. During the drying process make sure to use the mist and brush the hair in sections. After bathing use scissors to trim excess hair around the feet and anal areas. You can finish off by adding fancier touches like bands and bows.

4. Special Considerations:

   Don't use round brisk strokes while shampooing as this does not effectively lift the dirt. Use a light conditioner especially on the silky coated Yorkie as heavy conditioners might weigh down the coat and make it look dirty instead. Also while drying do not rub the coat harshly.

5. Other Tips:

   If you hold your dog in the towel after its bath it definitely saves on drying. Be extra careful while trimming nails to not cut the quick. Brushing teeth should be an essential part of Yorkie grooming or it could hurt your dog with infection in the long run.
