Jumping Fish in the aquarium can be quite a startling site, especially if you’re seeing it for the first time. Some fish, so it seems, are just jumpers and are going to continue to jump probably just for the shear pleasure of it!
However, there are some other conditions that can cause your fish to jump, some of which are not so pleasant for the fish, and which should not go unnoticed. First and foremost (as with all fish advice) you should be checking water quality daily. Poor water conditions can lead to all types of problems for fish including disease and death. Ammonia, pH, salinity and temperature levels should all be checked regularly. When the Ph in the water drops, fish will begin to jump because the water becomes irritating to their skin. The same holds true for water temperatures. Water temperature should be consistently 80-88 degrees at all times, with no fluctuations.
Once you’ve determined that the water quality is fine, another suspect in jumping fish is parasites, specifically Flukes. Flukes are small worms which attach themselves to the fish, usually near the gills. They proceed to feed on the fish skin, making the fish extremely uncomfortable. You may notice that your fish will rub themselves up against solid objects in the tank for relief, as well as jumping out of the water. Although Flukes are usually harmless, they can multiply quickly and become quite difficult if overcrowding or poor water quality issues exist in the tank. Flukes are easily treatable with Potassium Permanganate or Fluke Tablets. Another common treatment known to work well on Flukes is the use of salt baths, using a mixture of 3% salt over a period of several days.
Finally, if you’ve determined that the water quality is fine, and the fish are all in good health, you might want to consider a bigger tank, especially if there are a large number of fish living in the tank and congestion is becoming a problem. It could be that your jumping fish is outgrowing his environment. As I said earlier, it does appear that some fish are just jumpers! Some aquarium enthusiasts also believe that a jumping fish is a show of dominance over other fish. Irregardless, if you do not have a cover on your tank and you have a jumping fish in the house, I suggest you get one …Stat!
