Keeping Your Fish Safe From Other Pets

Keeping your fish safe from other pets can be such a pain sometimes. If you have multiple pets that are constantly fascinated with your aquarium and its contents, then you should consider getting additional equipment.

Aquarium covers are an effective way in keeping your fish safe from other pets. These are also useful in keeping out curious children, toys, and dust. If you have fish that jump; roaming ferrets, or water that tend to splash or evaporate more quickly, then aquarium covers will also serve you well.

To be effective in keeping your fish safe from other pets, you should get a cover that fits well to your tank, covering most of its top portion. You should also make sure to leave proper openings for filters and heaters. To make it easier for you to choose a cover, you can choose one that's made by the same manufacturer as your tank, so you can be sure of a nice fit. The aquarium cover should be fitted on the inside lip of the top aquarium frame so it won't be easily knocked over. Make sure to clean the glass portion of the aquarium cover regularly to keep it from getting cloudy, and blocking much needed light entering into your tank.

If you choose not to get aquarium covers, well, you will have to consider other options in keeping your fish safe from other pets. There are a few tricks on the book from experienced fish keepers in keeping your fish safe from other pets. If you have a cat that's constantly trying to get to your fish, some have had success in putting a small table or chair next to the aquarium. This way, your cat can ogle the fish through the glass sides rather than climbing to the top. Positive reinforcement can help in developing this habit - try rewarding your cat with food every time you see him settle into the chair or table instead of jumping on top of your tank. You can also try blocking his way to the top by putting a few soft metal sheets along whatever he's using to get to your aquarium's top.

You can also try getting new toys for your other pets. They might just be bored, and with new toys, their attention will be diverted. But remember, in using toys in keeping your fish safe from other pets, you should not put them out all at once. Consider rotating the toys and creating a good game for them.

There are a few more other tricks, like using small electric shocks, but these are not considered humane by some pet owners. There is no one way in keeping your fish safe from other pets, the key is trial and error and a lot of patience.
