Read About Wall Mounted Fish Tanks

Wall mounted fish tanks, also known as wall aquariums, are fish tanks which are mounted on or into the structure of a wall and are supported by the wall studs. Typically, wall mounted fish tanks are about 18 inches long by 18 inches wide, but custom models can run up to 7 feet long and beyond.

Why Would You Want One?

There are several advantages to wall mounted fish tanks, especially if you want an aquarium but don't have a lot of space in which to put it. Another reason might be pure aesthetics: also known as portrait aquariums, wall mounted fish tanks make for great pieces of "live art," as well as good conversation. Also, since they're usually mounted at eye level, wall mounted aquariums make for fabulous entertainment. And, since they're not sitting out on a table or stand, wall mounted tanks are good for environments in which a conventional aquarium might get knocked over or ruined, such as those with lots of people or small children. This might be why many public places, such as doctors' offices and restaurants, choose to display their aquarium collections in wall mounted tanks

Reasons to Avoid Wall Mounted Fish Tanks

Just as there are several reasons as to why you might want to look into a wall mounted aquarium, there are also several disadvantages to such a system. For starters, wall mounted tanks usually run only 4 to 6 inches wide, thereby limiting your choice of fish to those which can comfortably live in such a small habitat. Also, wall mounted options can only be placed in areas which have very strong wall support; some aquariums can weigh up to 300 pounds. Last, but certainly not least, wall mounted tanks are more expensive than standard aquariums, likely because of their complexity and unique design.

A side note: Remember too that because wall mounted tanks are smaller than conventional aquariums, you'll also need to find smaller rocks and gravel, filtration systems, pumps and other accessories with which to fill it-which might equate into purchasing some specialty or custom designed equipment. And saltwater/tropical fish lovers beware: while saltwater or tropical fish can certainly survive in a wall mounted aquarium if the conditions are right, wall mounted fish tanks are typically best for freshwater fish, which don't require as much of a specialized environment.

Alternatives:

If you like the look and idea of wall mounted fish tanks but don't want the hassle or worry that comes with a standard unit, there are other options. Consider an in-wall aquarium unit, which is wider and large enough to support a larger variety of fish and accessories than that of wall mounted models. Usually customizable with a wide range of sizes and finishes, in-wall aquariums, while more permanent than wall mounted fish tanks, are at times even more aesthetically pleasing and convenient-both to install and to maintain.
