1. Type of Competition:

   A horse show is where different horses compete for titles in different events such as show jumping and riding. Shows can be for just a particular breed or they can be open horse shows, which consider any horse breed. There are local horse shows and even national level horse shows that attract plenty of spectators.

2. Location:

   Some shows are always conducted at the same place while some shows change their location. For example, the Hampton Classic is always held at the Bridgehampton Showgrounds, New York while the National Horse Show is being conducted in Wellington, Florida for the third time and it was not the location for the show before that.

3. History:

   There was no organization to regulate horse shows and to make guidelines till 1917. In that year, the Association of American Horse Shows was formed by various horse show representatives. After several changes, the association is now called the United States Equestrian Federation. The oldest indoor horse show is the National Horse Show, which was conducted in 1883 at the Madison Square Garden.

4. Sanctioned:

   Horse shows that are meant for particular breeds are generally sanctioned and approved by the clubs associated with the breed. The shows should be conducted according to the guidelines of the United States Equestrian Federation.

5. Entrance Procedure:

   Different shows have different entrance procedures. Generally, the owner has to fill the entry form and pay the requisite fee. The horse shows would require the horses to be registered with the breed's respective organization and certified free from problems like Equine Infectious Anemia.

6. Classes:

   The different classes in a horse show are according to the events and the rider of the horse. Event wise there are three basic classes. Pleasure class has events that judge the horse for its riding ease. In the timed class, there are events like barrel racing and western riding. In the equestrian class, the events are meant to judge the rider for giving the proper orders and controlling the horse. Horse shows also have western events like reining and working cow horse.

7. Judging:

   The judges judge the horses in disciplines such as Dressage, Pleasure riding, Reining, Show Jumping, Endurance, Eventing etc.

8. Awards:

   Horses that come in the top ten places are given ribbons of different colors to show their rank. The colors of the ribbons are blue, red, yellow, white, pink, green, purple, brown, gray, and light blue respectively. Awards are given for every class and the awards are not only for the horses but also for the riders and breeders. There are cash as well as non-cash prizes at the horse shows.
