Read About Choosing Aviaries & Flight Cages

There are many styles and sizes of aviaries and flight cages to choose. If you´re having a hard time determining the right one, you should talk to an Avian Vet.

Things to Consider:

  • Safety Outdoors – If you keep your aviary outside, you need to be sure to protect your bird(s) against potential predators. The wire in some cages is wide enough for mice or weasels to get through. You might want to consider using "sticky strip" rodent traps in your birdcage as a preventative measure.

  • Avoid Round Shapes – Since cylindrical cages are often too small, you should try to avoid this type of cage. Some birds also feel insecure in a cylindrical cage, as there are no corners for them to "retreat" to when they´re stressed or afraid, yet another reason to avoid them.

  • Breed of Bird – The type of bird you own should determine the height and width of the cage. For instance, a narrow, long cage is better for small birds because they don´t fly up and down but side to side. A taller cage is good for larger birds because it allows them to climb, which gives them an additional means of exercise.
