Read About Choosing Bird Nail Care

If your bird is especially squeamish about having his nails trimmed, you should only trim one or two each day. That way, in a couple of days, you´re done before your pet knows you´ve even started.

Things to Consider:

  • Sanding Overgrown Nails – Sand perch covers are a great solution if your bird has overgrown nails. Place the sand cover over a perch your bird uses when eating or drinking. You should avoid placing this cover on the perch your bird sleeps on, as this could cause irritation from overuse.

  • Trimming Claws – If you choose to trim your bird´s claws on your own, you purchase a styptic on hand, which is a blood clotting aid, to stop any bleeding that may occur.

  • Clip in Moderation – If your bird´s nails have grown too much, don´t clip them all at once. Instead, clip 1&ndash to 2&ndashmm a week until they are the length you would prefer.
