Read About Choosing Dog Travel

Traveling with a dog can be great fun and very rewarding for owner and pet alike. But there are some things to do that will make it a terrific experience.

Things to consider: Getting a dog accustomed to riding in the car, what to pack for lengthy trips, and investing in travel supplies.

  • Driving with a Dog - Dog travel can be a trying experience for a dog if they are not used to it. So be sure that before you take your dog for a trip of any extensive length, that you help him get adjusted to travel. First, just bring the dog into the car a few times and just sit there, without going anywhere. Let him simply get comfortable in the automotive environment. If he will be traveling in car seats and restraints or dog carriers, put him in them and, again, just sit there for a while, enjoying each other's company. After a few tries at this, you will be ready for a drive around the block. Then take a longer drive. Finally, when you start driving to actual destinations, make sure some of them are pleasant and enjoyable -- like the park, the beach, a friend's house. Do not get your dog accustomed to the idea that every time he gets in the car, you are going to either the kennel or the vet.

  • Long Trips - When you and your dog travel anywhere for any length of time, make sure that you remember to pack his flea and tick preventatives, his heartworm pills, and other dog medicines he may need while you are away from home. Also, bring enough of his regular dog food if you do not know that the same food can be found where you are going. You do not want to add an upset stomach to the upset your dog may already be feeling traveling. Rounding out the list are: current registration and I.D. tags (including proof of rabies vaccination), dog first aid kit, and dog grooming kit.

  • 2 of Everything - If you and your dog travel frequently, it may be worthwhile to have a completely separate set of dog dishes and bowls, dog collars and leashes, dog treats, and dog toys just for whenever you and your dog travel.
