Excessive Meowing

Excessive meowing

Dinner has been made, dishes are done, and you are looking forward to some peace and quiet after a long day. Your cat however feels differently. This seems like the perfect time to start talking to you, and before you know it, she is chattering away with a meow meow here and a meow meow there. No matter what time of day it is, excessive meowing from your dear cat can become bothersome. There are several things you can do to help interpret what your kitty is trying to say. Your cat´s meowing is her way of talking to you, expressing to you want she wants or needs. When your cat starts to meow, take a moment to watch her. What is she doing?

  1. Is she walking around or near the litter box? Does it need litter added or has access to the box been blocked?
  2. Is your cat sitting by her food dish? Is she out of food or water?
  3. As you walk from room to room, are you having trouble avoiding stepping on your pet as she follows you around, intertwining herself between your legs? There is a good chance she is asking for your attention. Make sure you take time to spend time with your pets -- playing, combing, cuddling, and petting them. You know how much your pets mean to you, take care that they do too.

Okay, so you´ve check the obvious and your kitty is still trying to get her message across to you and while it may seem obvious to her, you are clueless. It may just be impossible to interpret what she is saying.

Sometimes we simply don´t know what, if anything, our cats want. No matter what we do, they keep meowing. Can you do anything to teach them not to meow? The most important task you can do to modify your cats´ behavior in an effort to prevent excessive meowing is to reward their good behavior and ignore their bad behavior. Pay attention to your cat when she is being quiet -- pet her or give her a treat to reinforce her good behavior. If you give in to your cat´s meowing, you are encouraging her and giving her no reason to stop -- why should she? She is being taught that by meowing, she will get what she wants. She has managed to modify your behavior to suit her!

It may take time and patience on your part to change your pet´s behavior, but the result will be a more harmonious and quiet surrounding for all.
