Excessive Shedding

Is your kitty covering your home with excessive hair? Is your cat´s diet causing this or something else?

Cats have a normal shedding cycle; mostly it occurs in the Spring and Fall. If your keep your cat indoors then he could shed year round. Brushing your cat´s coat daily will help remove all of the dead hair. High amounts of stress could also be causing your cat´s shedding problem. Once the stress diminishes your cat´s coat should return to normal.

  1. Your cat´s coat is constantly growing, replacing the old hairs that have shed naturally. The new hairs require a lot of nutrients and protein for their proper development and growth. If you notice your cat´s coat looks weak, brittle, dull and the hairs are easily broken, this could be caused by a lack of nutrients and protein.

  2. The wrong diet isn´t the only cause of nutrition related hair loss. Intestinal parasites could also be causing the lack of nutrients. Intestinal parasites take vital nutrients from you cat, causing his coat to shed excessively, or become dull and brittle.

  3. If your cat scratches a lot this can also cause excessive shedding and hair loss. He may be suffering from allergies or have a problem with fleas. Check him out and look for any signs of flea infestation. Even if you don´t see any, it would still be a good idea to use flea prevention on him. You have several choices available to you; flea powders, flea collars and flea shampoos.

If you want a definite reason for your cat´s excessive shedding, take a trip to your veterinarian and find the problem. He will then let you know what needs to be done; change of diet, use of flea products or it may be an allergy. Providing your feline friend with a healthy and nutritional diet will help keep his coat shiny and healthy. It will also aid in the healing your cats coat after the diagnosis has been made.
