How Often to Feed An Older Cat

How often should you feed your cat? If you have had your cat since it was a baby, then you probably have a feeding schedule in place. If you have adopted an older cat, then you may have to work at to get feeding time to go smoothly. Even if you have raised your cat from a kitten, you may not be aware that you have to adjust the amounts and volume that you feed your pets as they grow older. The amounts of food your cat takes in should be about one half what he ate as a kitten. Take a moment to read over the following tips as they may help you feed your older cat properly.

  1. Older cats may need softer food so you should give him canned food or moisten his dry food. Whichever you choose, you´ll want to feed him about twice a day.

  2. You should make sure to feed him about 3⁄4 an ounce of food per pound of body weight at each feeding. This particular guideline can be found on the back of several cans of cat food, and you should always read the labels of your pet food carefully.

  3. Much of your cat´s food intake will depend on his lifestyle. If your older cat remains healthy and active he could eat a little more as long as he is getting plenty of exercise.

Whether you have a kitten or an older cat, his feeding schedule is an important part of his daily routine. As a cat grows older, though, it is more important to stick to the schedule as overeating can cause him to become overweight, which in turn will cause a host of health problems. If you underfeed him, on the other hand, he may more easily become ill and not have the strength to fight off infections and diseases.
