Reducing Hairballs

Does your cat wake you up in the middle of the night with the Hack, Hack, Hack of a hairball? Wouldn´t you love to know how to prevent this? Then read on.

I know we have all had that bad feeling when we get up in the middle of the night and our bare feet step right into the nice cold gooiness of a hairball. Here are some preventative tips to keep that from happening again.

  1. Grooming your cat regularly is one of the most important things to do. Use a pet brush made specifically for cats; if you have a long haired breed you may need a thicker pet brush. Brushing your cat daily to remove loose hair is the best preventative for hairballs. All cats shed more in the spring time, so this daily brushing is important. After brushing, use a damp cloth to wipe your cat´s coat down, this will get rid of any loose hairs after the brushing.
  2. Hairball remedies are also available to help prevent them from recurring. The best supplement to get is one which can be added to their food to aid in the elimination of excess hair. Laxatives in the form of paste have been recommended for many years also. There are several brands available that your cat will love. If you don´t want to put the paste in his food, you can also try rubbing it on his mouth or feet. They will swallow it while they groom themselves.
  3. There is also cat food that has hairball remedies in them. Then you don´t have to add anything extra for the prevention. But you do have to continue the daily brushings.

If you follow these tips for hairball prevention then you and your cat will be much happier together, and there will be no more middle of the night surprises.
