Vegetarian Diet

You are a vegetarian, is it healthy for your cat to be one too?

More and more people are becoming vegetarians; they are also considering giving their furry companion a vegan diet too. Is this healthy for them?

  1. Your cat did evolve from predators and carnivores. Due to the evolution through breeding and adaptation, they are substantially different from their kinfolk. Your cat is actually more of an omnivore than you might think. I know you´ve seen your cat basking in the sun and nibbling the grass several times and other vegetation. With this considered it´s pretty safe to say that your cat can rely on a healthy vegan diet.

  2. Some supplements will need to be added to your cats diet once all meat is removed from it. Eliminating meat from your cats diet could also help him lose those unwanted pounds too. You should give your cat a B-12 tablet once a week, a daily multi-vitamin or a B-12 rich spirulina. They are also supplements specifically made for cats on a vegetarian diet.

  3. To start your cat on the road to a vegan lifestyle, choose vegetable sources for the protein component of their meals. These proportions may need to be little higher. Feeding a variety of ingredients is also important, because some cats love variety. This also helps you make sure your cat is getting the balance of nutrients and amino acids they need.

  4. You can use Tofu, tempeh, lentils, beans and split peas to replace the meat your cat used to eat. If you are using beans, soak them overnight, rinse well, and cook until soft (adding a potato while cooking will get rid of gassiness). Put them in a food processor with a little garlic and puree.

  5. You also need to include fruits in your cat´s diet. This will give them a range of nutrients and they´ll love the taste. Some cat favorites are sweet potatoes, melon, squash and corn. There are also vegetarian pet foods on the market that are nutritious and healthy as well.

You and your cat will thrive with your new vegetarian lifestyles and you´ll notice your cat´s coat is glossier, his breath is fresher and teeth are cleaner, he has more energy and an overall sense of peace and tranquility.
