Is your dog naughty or nice?
With the way Spot has been acting lately, you should have named him Destructo. Is he really a mischievous dog or is just getting bored?
You've been gone for several hours and are anxious to get home to see Spot. You left him in the backyard with plenty of water and food as well a few of his all time favorite toys. You come home to a note on the door that says your dog has been howling while you were away. Then you walk into the backyard to find a complete mess. There are holes dug everywhere and the hammock has been shredded. A bored dog is a naughty dog. Just like children, without enough stimulation, your dog will act out.
- Try making some time for an activity with your dog before he is to be left alone. Even 15 minutes allows enough time for a quick walk and to toss the ball around a few times. This interaction with you before you leave should make it easier for him to make it on his own for a few hours.
- How long has it been since his toys have been replaced? If Spot is accustomed to having the same few toys with him, you will need to add to his collection. Ideally, you will have enough toys to have several sets that you rotate every couple of days. This way, there will always something new and fun to play with every couple of days.
- If Spot is an inside/outside dog like most are, install a pet door. When Spot gets tired of being in one place he can easily go to another. Have a basket of toys available by the door so it is easy for him grab a fun toy on the way in or out.
It's understandable that your dog gets bored when you are away or can not play with him. Making a few adjustments with his surroundings will likely remedy the problem. Dogs are much happier when they have the proper amount of stimulation.
Make sure you have all the supplies you need to keep Spot stimulated. Keep a variety of toys on hand and keep them exciting by rotating them on a regular basis.
