Some dogs simply do not like other animals. While this can be a challenge, you need to determine if this is a problem for your family. Some professionals do not recommend dog parks for all dogs. Obviously, if your dog has a problem socializing with other dogs, dog parks would not be a good option. You do have a few alternatives:
- You can accept that your dog doesn´t like other dogs. By "other dogs," we mean "strange dogs." You will need to train your dog to behave around other dogs. They don´t have to be social, but hostility must be curbed. The best way to do would be through normal training techniques. As always, a few sessions with a dog trainer may help your and your pet with this issue.
- A dog may have had some terrible experiences earlier in its life that taught him that other dogs are to be feared. A poorly socialized dog will revert to pack behavior, attempting to establish dominance with other dogs. This behavior is also problematic. If you have gotten your dog to the point where they know that you are their pack leader, dominance aggression can often be nipped in the bud.
- Dog parks are probably a very bad idea for your dog. For whatever reason, your dog doesn't like strange dogs. Your dog will not magically start liking strangers. Dog runs are, generally, unsupervised areas. It is not fair to your dog to risk his well-being and health by attempting to make him interact with dogs that are strangers to him.
