Food Roles in Dental Health

Believe it or not, your canine's dental health is closely related to your own. It is extremely important that you feed your pet the right foods in order to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile. No, this does not mean you have to set a place at the table for your best friend. However, you should follow your dog's diet and food intake as closely as you do your own. Just as the wrong foods can cause bad breath and cavities in human mouths, it can cause the same damage in your dogs. Try the following tips:

  1. If your pooch is suffering from dental problems, he should exhibit some of the following signs: loss of appetite, broken teeth, red, swollen or bleeding gums, and foul breath. Whether or not he shows signs of disease it is imperative to get him started on the right track. You should schedule a complete dental check-up that includes a cleaning with the local veterinarian. He will clean your dog's teeth and point out any problems and signs of potential dental diseases and recommend a treatment plan.
  2. Now that you have been to the vet it is your turn to do your part. When you purchase dog food look for brands that have natural ingredients. Natural blends such as chicken and oatmeal help reduce plaque build up. It's very important not to feed your dog chocolate and other sweets as this can cause cavities. His sweet tooth can be satisfied with a variety of treats available on the market.
  3. You should also brush your dog's teeth twice a week.

Remember, anything that will cause harm to your dental health will likely harm your pet's dental health. You must remember to read labels and relate his diet to yours.
