Teaching Tricks

Teaching Fido a few party tricks is as easy as wash, rinse and repeat. The following tips will make Fido the life of the party in no time.

Your dog loves to please you and you love to show him off. Teaching your pooch some easy dog tricks can be a positive experience for both of you. As with all dog training, remember that positive reinforcement is the key. The following tips can help you teach Fido how to perform some of the easiest tricks to learn.

  1. Shaking hands is favorite dog trick and easy to teach. Even a beginner at dog training can help their canine friend learn this classic trick. It is as simple as picking up your puppy's paw, releasing it, and then rewarding him with a treat. Stop as many times during the day as you can, and go through this routine (limit each session to 30 seconds). In no time Fido will be shaking on command.
  2. Teaching your dog to sit on command is also very easy to teach. This trick is as useful as it is fun. Hold a treat above the pup's head, gently push down his backside, say sit, and then reward him with a treat. Repeat this at regular intervals throughout the day, and your dog will sit on your command before you know it.
  3. If you really want Fido to be the life of the party, teach him to bow. If your dog loves treats, this couldn't be easier. Kneel next to your dog and place a treat between his front legs as he starts to bend down move the treat back slightly, he should move into a bowing position. When he does say bow and allow him to have the treat. Repeat this at regular intervals through the day and Fido will have mastered the bow shortly.

With any of these tricks, you will want to stop offering treats and replace it with praise once the dog gets the hang of it. Wait until one trick is mastered before beginning a new one. You will also want to wait a week or so in between tricks so the frequent treats will become special again.

Make sure to have plenty of treats and special new toys on hand before you begin this process. You don´t want to take a step backwards in the training process because you run out of his favorite treat.
