Choosing a pet veterinarian is an important decision that every responsible pet owner must make. Some people choose vets simply based on their proximity or advertising. It is important, though, that you find someone with whom you can build a relationship when choosing a pet veterinarian.
You want to make sure you are comfortable with the facility when choosing a pet veterinarian. You should not be greeted at the door by an unpleasant smell, nor should the facility appear dirty in any way. You should feel comfortable when you walk in the door of the clinic. Is it neat and organized? Is the staff friendly and professional? You want to feel not only welcome but also comfortable in the clinic.
If particular office hours are important to you, ask about this when choosing a pet veterinarian. You may know that you want to schedule routine visits in the evening or on weekends, so be sure the office can accommodate this. Find out if the facility is available for emergency situations. If not, ask what the procedure is when you have an emergency. Do they have an emergency clinic they recommend? Will the doctors at that clinic work with your regular veterinarian to provide the best care?
If you have an exotic pet, be sure the veterinarian you are considering handles your species. If you have both “typical” pets and exotic animals, choosing a pet veterinarian who handles both may limit your choices. If you find a vet you like who handles one, ask who they might recommend for the other.
Beyond the staff you meet when you walk in, are you comfortable with the doctor or doctors in the office? When choosing a pet veterinarian, you should find someone with whom you are comfortable asking questions and whose answers are clear and understandable to you. Some pet owners like to have all of the technical jargon explained to them, others want simple answers that are easy to comprehend. You need to decide what your preferences are when choosing a pet veterinarian. If there is more than one doctor in the practice, ask what their policy is on seeing multiple doctors. Do you prefer to see one doctor for all visits, or do you want to establish a rapport with each? Do the doctors belong to any professional organizations? Does each specialize in any one area?
Above all the technical information, you need to see how the doctor interacts with your animal before choosing a pet veterinarian. You want to select someone with whom both you and your pet will be comfortable. When choosing a pet veterinarian, you are also choosing someone to help you care for your beloved friend; take your time and make your decision wisely.
