you must take into account three things, your climate, the gear you will need and the size of your pond.
If you happen to live in a colder climate then there is no need to worry, you still have options when choosing pond fish. Your first option is to purchase cold climate fish. Goldfish and Koi have been known to do well in colder climates, among many other fish. Then you have the option of buying a heater for your pond. And of course, there is always the option of draining your pond in the winter and housing the fish indoors in a tank of some sort. If you live in a warmer climate, then choosing pond fish will be a much easier task for you because you do have more options. You can choose from a variety of goldfish, koi and tropical fish as well as many others.
Next, you must consider the size of your pond because this directly relates to the amount of fish you will place in it. When choosing pond fish, you first need to asses the surface area of your pond. A popular formula for measuring how many fish is to allow 60 square cm. of surface for every 1 cm of fish. Start off with less than half of this number since fish will obviously grow and breed as well.
It is also crucial to remember that you will need some sort of filtering system before you even think about choosing pond fish. You can put your fish in danger of dying from pollutants in your pond if you do not supply 
them with some sort of filtering system, whether it be biological or mechanical.
Choosing pond fish does not have to be a chore. Read up on what kind of fish would go great with your climate and size of pond. There are hundreds upon hundreds of species of fish to choose from. Although your goal may be to make your pond beautiful, you still must keep in mind you want your fish to be happy and healthy as well. When choosing pond fish have a good time, just keep the important details like the health and safety of your fish in mind.
