Read About Pond Waterfall Construction

A waterfall is a wonderful and calming addition to any pond. Here's what you need to know about Pond Waterfall Construction.

Creating a Natural Look

The first thing you'll need to consider is how you will achieve the necessary height for your waterfall. If you can exploit a natural slope, that is the ideal solution. If not, you can build a slope into an edge to create a place for your waterfall. This can be difficult and expensive, though, and you'll need to lay down a flexible liner held in place with rocks. Many people opt for a concrete liner or even build a simple waterfall with rocks they find right in their yards.

For an easy waterfall project, collect 25-30 rocks, choosing as many flat rocks as possible. Gather a submersible pump, tubing and a large plastic flowerpot for the project. Look at your rocks and choose a few flat ones that cup slightly as your spillway rocks. Turn the flowerpot upside down at the edge of the pond and thread the pump tubing through the hole in the bottom. Build rock walls all around the flowerpot, staggering as you go. As you build, create a shelf for your spillway rocks. Once you've covered the flowerpot with rocks, gently sandwich the tubing at the top with two flat rocks to create the waterfall cap. Position the spillway rocks so that the water cascades down them and into the pond. It may take a few tries before you find the right positioning for the spillway. Shim them by positioning smaller rocks as necessary to achieve the right angle and look. Then sit back and enjoy the calming sound of water cascading into your pond.
