A Healthy Diet for Amphibians

Reptiles and amphibians that rely on insects or fruits and vegetables for the bulk of their nutrition are at risk of nutritional deficiencies in captivity. One way to provide a healthy diet is to offer a variety of foods, not offering the same things day in and day out. But most reptile and amphibian pets will benefit from vitamin and mineral supplements.

Fast-growing reptiles require calcium and phosphorus supplements to support the growth of strong bones and, for turtles, strong, healthy shells. Vitamin supplements containing vitamin B12 can help stimulate sluggish reptilian appetites and give lethargic critters a boost of energy. Young, fast-growing animals and reproducing females are the most susceptible to nutritional diseases.

Lack of sufficient nutrition can lead to skeletal deformities and bone injuries, sores on the skin, trembling, seizures, weakness, infections and even death. Take note that overdosing with vitamins and minerals is just as dangerous as under-dosing.

Before you adopt a reptile or amphibian as a pet, do some research about what its nutritional needs are and how you can best supply them. Is your pet an herbivore, a carnivore or an omnivore? Feeding too much protein to an herbivore can result in deformities and kidney failure. True herbivores require large quantities of food to stay nourished.
