Read About Litter Training Reptiles

Litter training reptiles, while challenging, can be done with some species. Most people who report success litter training reptiles have done so with iguanas. Other lizards, such as geckos or anoles, are likely to be very hard to train to do anything at all.

The most commonly successful method of litter training reptiles (iguanas, in particular) is to first decide where you want the designated litter spot to be. It is best to select a location that you can easily access for two reasons. Number one, you need to be able to place the iguana in this spot to let him know Imagethis is where you want him to eliminate. Number two, you want this location to be someplace easy for you to access for removing the waste and soiled substrate and cleaning the area.

Once you have chosen the designated litter spot, continually place the reptile there at the times you generally expect him to need to eliminate (immediately after waking, shortly after eating, after a play session, etc.). If the reptile tries to leave the area, pick him up and place him back in the spot. After he has successfully eliminated here, allow him to move around freely once again. Litter training reptiles will take time and patience. In some cases, it may never work, In other cases, the reptile may slowly begin to head to this specific spot on his own, and primarily eliminate there.

Be aware however, that potty-training habits can be easily broken even after you have spent a great deal of time and effort litter training reptiles. This break in habits can sometimes be a result of stress on the animal. A new home, changes to the environment, a different caretaker, or other stressful situations can cause a regression of sorts and the reptile may no longer follow his litter training. In other situations,Image the reptile (again, iguanas in particular) may choose to ignore their litter training and instead eliminate outside of the appropriate location. At times it even seems as though a previously litter trained iguana will specifically select a location such as a favorite shoe or nice piece of furniture on which to eliminate!
