Pet Rabbit

Care and feeding pet rabbit and everything you need to know to take the best care of your pet is included in this article.

Care and Feeding Pet Rabbit - Health

  1. Inoculations:

You need to keep your rabbit's inoculations up-to-date. They require two vaccines yearly, they are Haemorrhagic Disease vaccine (VHD) and Myxomatosis vaccine.
  2. Vet Visits:

You need to take your rabbit in to your veterinarian annually for check ups and inoculations. Anytime your rabbit becomes ill you should also take it to the vet.
  3. Grooming:

Short haired rabbits do not usually need to be groomed but long haired bunnies will require grooming on a regular basis to prevent the coat from becoming matted.
  4. Pet Proofing Your Home:

Rabbits are very curious and love to chew. You will need to keep wires covered so rabbits do not chew them. They also love to chew wood. So keep your rabbit away from areas in your home where there is a lot of wood.
  5. Environment:

Rabbits can be housed either indoors or outdoors. If they are housed outdoors, you need to keep them warm during the winter months and cool during the summer months. Rabbits do better with cool weather than they do with warm weather.
  6. Exercise:

Rabbits love to play and jump. When rabbits become excited and happy they jump. Make sure you allow enough room in their cage or hutch for them to jump and play.

Care and Feeding Pet Rabbit - Food

  1. Type:

Rabbits should be fed a pellet food or rabbit mix food daily. They also need a mixture of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, a grass mixture, or flowers daily. You also need to feed your rabbit hay constantly.
  2. Variety or Always the Same:

You should keep the pellet food or rabbit mix the same. You can vary the fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, grasses, and flowers.
  3. Bowls -- Fancy or Plain:

There are many different bowls you can buy for your rabbit. He/she will be happy with any bowl you choose for them.
  4. Treats:

Rabbits will love any treats you give them. Be sure to watch giving treats that are high in sugar to your rabbit because it can cause obesity.

Care and Feeding Pet Rabbit - Temperament

  1. Pet Temperament:

Rabbits are usually not aggressive animals. They need a place to hide or retreat if they are scared.
  2. Pet Socialization:

Rabbits are very sociable animals. If you put two males (bucks) together you may notice some fighting, which is common. Rabbits usually are scared of dogs and cats, so it is probably not a good idea to let them be around those pets. Rabbits are usually sociable with humans. Just introduce your rabbit slowly to strangers.
  3. Playing With Your Pet:

Rabbits love to play with their owners. So take time each day to play with him/her.
  4. Behavior Problems:

Rabbits can have behavioral issues, but usually you can work with your rabbit to overcome them.
  5. Training:

Rabbits can be trained somewhat. You have to work with them at a young age. Rabbits are usually very easily litter box trained.

Care and Feeding Pet Rabbit - Supplies

  1. What You Need:

You will need a cage or hutch, food bowls, water bottle, litter and litter box, a warren (place to hide in), bedding for the cage (pine shavings, etc), rabbit food, hay, and rabbit treats.
