Ferret Care

Care of ferrets, and everything you need to know to take the best care of your pet is included in this article.

Care of Ferrets - Health

  1. Inoculations:

If a ferret comes in contact with a virus from an infected dog, it is sad to say, but the ferret will probably die and quickly, sometimes in less than 5 weeks.
  2. Vet Visits:

It is a good idea also that you go to the vet armed with the right information, so the two vaccines that you should mention to your vet, or inquire about are Duramune DA2PI or Nobivac Puppy DP. If your vet doesn't have these, and is unwilling to order them in for you, then you should find another vet!
  3. Grooming:

Most ferrets actually enjoy a bath, but unless there is a reason to bathe, a once a year bath is all that is necessary.
  4. Pet Proofing Your Home:

Ferrets can literally have the run of your home, but since they tend to get into everything, letting them run unsupervised is not a good idea.
  5. Environment:

Have a good safe cage for your ferret where he or she can be comfortable and safe when you are not around, but definitely let the ferret out whenever possible.
  6. Exercise:

Ferrets love to run about, so a daily amount of time out of the cage is necessary.

Care of Ferrets - Food

  1. Type:

Generally, a medium quality canned cat food will do just fine. If you go the extra mile and purchase the food that has the pictures of ferrets on it, check the ingredients against the cat food. You might find that they are quite the same, yet you will probably pay much more for the one with the ferret picture.
  2. Variety or Always the Same:

A ferret likes a little variety, but keeping them on the same type of food is advisable. Don't get experimental with your ferret's diet.
  3. Bowls -- Fancy or Plain:

The ferret doesn't care about the bowl, just what is in it.
  4. Treats:

Read the ingredients of the treats and check against the basic ingredients of the regular food, they should be similar.

Care of Ferrets - Temperament

  1. Pet Temperament:

Ferrets are totally inquisitive and will get into small places that they probably shouldn't. You have to watch a ferret, but watching your ferret is a fun activity.
  2. Pet Socialization:

Two ferrets are better than one! They really get along well and you get double the enjoyment.
  3. Playing With Your Pet:

Ferrets will come to you for a treat and can be taught to do tricks, plus they love the interaction of playing with you.
  4. Behavior Problems:

Ferrets tend to want to dig a lot so if you take them outside, try to find areas where there isn't soft dirt that they can get into.
  5. Training:

Ferrets can learn to sit up, roll over, ride on your shoulder or in the hood of your jacket and other fun things. They also can be litter trained.

Care of Ferrets - Supplies

  1. What You Need:

You need a good safe place for your ferret to sleep and enough time to spend with it. If you don't have any time to spend with a ferret, don't get one.
  2. What You'll Want:

Other things that ferret owners sometimes enjoy having is a good travel cage because ferrets love to go on trips.
