Guinea Pig Care

Guinea pig care is very important to maintaining the health of your guinea pig and preventing problems. Everything you need to know to take the best care of your pet is included in this article.

Guinea Pig Care - Health

  1. Inoculations:

Your guinea pig will not need any inoculations because they are indoor animals with a minimum of exposure to common diseases.
  2. Vet Visits:

Your guinea pig will not need regular vet care, but you can take it to a clinic or emergency animal hospital if it becomes injured or ill.
  3. Grooming:

Grooming your guinea pig is easy. You let it groom itself. Guinea pigs will keep their fur nice and clean.
  4. Pet Proofing Your Home:

Keep your guinea pig in a cage when you cannot supervise it directly. This will help make sure the guinea pig cannot get under couches or stuck in any awkward areas.
  5. Environment:

Your guinea pig's environment will usually be its cage, but you can take it out and let it run around the house or sit in your lap to give it a change of pace.
  6. Exercise:

Guinea pigs can exercise by running around your home when you are supervising them.

Guinea Pig Care - Food

  1. Type:

Guinea pig food comes in pellet form and can be placed in a food dish that is placed in the cage.
  2. Variety or Always the Same:

Your guinea pig can eat the same food every day without becoming deficient in any nutrients.
  3. Bowls -- Fancy or Plain:

There is no need to buy fancy bowls for your guinea pig since the bowls are likely to get knocked over during its daily activities.
  4. Treats:

You do not need to give your guinea pig any treats, as it will do just fine with regular food.

Guinea Pig Care - Temperament

  1. Pet Temperament:

Guinea pigs can display a wide variety of temperaments. They can be playful, angry, nervous, scared, or aggressive.
  2. Pet Socialization:

You can take your guinea pig out of its cage and let it roam around to meet other members of the family.
  3. Playing With Your Pet:

You can hold and pet your guinea pig, and you can also take it out of its cage and let it run around a large room for some exercise.
  4. Behavior Problems:

Your guinea pig may bite you if it gets scared.
  5. Training:

There is no specific training program for guinea pigs.

Guinea Pig Care - Supplies

  1. What You Need:

You will need a sturdy cage, bedding, pellet food, food and water dishes, and other supplies for taking care of your guinea pig on a daily basis.
  2. What You'll Want:

You may want to keep some medical supplies around in case your guinea pig becomes ill or gets injured. They can come in handy in minimizing damage or preventing further injury or disease.
