Dog Training Collars

If you are planning on training your dog or having someone do it for you, then a dog training collar would be a great investment. Did you know there were several types of training collars? There sure are! And over the next couple of minutes, we are going to go over the different types and their uses.

First of all, dog training collars are just that, for training. Only have the dog wear the training collar when he or she is being supervised by you. A training collar is specifically meant to teach your dog how to walk civilly with you outside. No one likes a dog running wild or watching an owner chase their pet around for hours so teaching your dog how to follow instructions is crucial.

The first type of collar, which is also the most controversial collar out there is the shock collar. This collar sends a shock to the dog when improper behavior occurs. This is used as a negative reinforcement for bad behavior and is not the most popular method out today. Most trainers and experts try to implement positive reinforcement for good behavior instead.

The next type of collar is the choke collar. It does exactly as it name says. This collar needs to be used properly, if even used at all. Beware, if used improperly, it could cause damage to the neck or trachea. This is also a type of negative reinforcement for bad behavior.

The last on the list of dog traning collars is the prong collar. The prong collar inhibits the dog from pulling. You must be careful not to choke the dog with this collar as well. The noise coming from the links is supposed to teach the dog that the behavior is wrong but is often used incorrectly.

There are also harnesses used with dog training collars. A full body harness is said to give the dog more pulling strength because he is the strongest in this area. The front hook body harness seems to work better because it inhibits pulling and tends to put no pressure on the throat.

Lastly, you have your head halter which is often confused with a muzzle. This seems to be one of the most effective training collars on the market because it completely inhibits the dog from pulling, but at the same time, does not injure the pup. It may take a while for your dog to get used to this method, so give him time.

Remember, choosing a collar for training is completely up to you. Just keep in mind that dogs need to be treated humanely or you could trigger some aggressive behavior. If you feel you can’t gain control of your pup no matter what method you use, then consult an expert. Dog training collars are great tools only when used humanely and properly, so be sure you are doing just that!
