Read About Cat Breeds

Before You Buy

No matter your requirements for owning a cat, there is probably a breed that is ideal for you. There are many breeds of cat in the U.S. and abroad, and each one comes with a different list of general personality traits and characteristics.

First decide on a few basic criteria, like the following:

  • How active do you want your cat to be?

  • How committed to a daily grooming regimen are you?

  • How independent do you want your cat to be?

  • Do you want a friendly cat who likes to sit on your lap?

  • How exotic of a breed are you looking for?

  • Are you thinking about breeding or showing your cat in professional venues?

After you answer the questions above, you can begin to look for breeds that match the criteria you’ve set. Go online and do your research, or consult a professional at a pet store or breeding facility. Ask your local veterinarian or humane society employee about breed types and personalities.

There is no guarantee that your cat will conform exactly to the general traits or intelligence levels. They only serve as a guideline for average performance across the breed.
