Read About Special Needs Horses

If you are in the market for a new horse, you should not necessarily reject Special Needs Horses. Here is everything you need to know about these horses.

Injuries

A horse with a leg injury was once considered useless and was therefore quickly euthanized. However, there are ways to treat injuries with splints. Some treatments involve hoisting the horse up onto a pulley mechanism so he or she hangs freely. Some horses cannot handle this type of treatment, and have a violent reaction. It is often very difficult to keep casts on horses in this panicked state, because they tend to bite or rub off the casts.

Malnourishment

The sad truth is that many horses are often sold at auctions in an obvious state of malnutrition. You can easily see their ribs, and their skin is stretched too tight. A proper diet is required to bring these victims of neglect back to normal, but it will take a while for the horse to adjust.

Allergies

Some horses have allergies, just like people. These horses may be allergic to certain fungal spores in hay, and will have reactions. Sometimes soaking the hay in water is necessary to remove these spores, or completely substitute the hay altogether.

In summary, Special Needs Horses may cost you some extra time and money to care for, but even the healthiest horse is a sizeable investment of this. Before you purchase any horse, always be certain you know what you’re getting into before you buy.
