Breeding a dog is a time-consuming and sometimes heart-wrenching experience. It's important to be sure you are breeding for the right reasons. Learn everything you can about the breed and research how well the
puppies sell. There are a lot of things to consider and it's important for you to be prepared and to be a responsible breeder.
Protecting Your Dog's Health
Make sure your dog is healthy and is up to date on her vaccines before you even allow your dog to get pregnant. Once she has become pregnant, take her for regular vet visits to make sure everything is going well. Once the pups are delivered you'll want to have the puppies and the mother thoroughly checked out.
Some breeders also do the heartworm test and the first round of vaccines for the puppies.
Preparing for Labor and delivery
Though it is an exciting time, you'll also need to be prepared in case of an emergency. Have an emergency dog care kit ready in advance and keep an emergency vet number on hand. You should also prepare yourself because complications can arise in which the mother loses one of her pups or she has trouble delivering. In most cases, however, all you have to do it provide a comfortable place for her to deliver with plenty of bedding and privacy.
