Tips for a Happy Dog

Make sure your dog knows who’s boss. Every pooch has an innate need to know her place in the world; position is everything to a dog, and being second place is just fine as long as she knows where she stands. Be a strong leader in your dog’s life. You’re the one who sets the routine and makes the rules. You’re the one she should look to for protection and guidance and permission for every move she makes.

A little training goes a long way. No matter how lax you are about your dog’s behavior, you can both rest a little easier if you teach her the basic commands of Sit, Stay, Come, and Down. When your dog obeys those commands, she’s not just making life easier for you; the commands can come in handy to keep her out of dangerous situations, too.

Keep your dog’s needs in mind. Dogs are living, breathing creatures with feelings and needs. Beyond the physical needs of shelter, food, and water, your dog also has emotional needs. Give her the attention and playtime she craves, and make her a part of your family by including her in everything.

Create a safe space for your dog. Every pup should have a place she can call her own, whether it’s a custom-built dog house in the backyard or a cozy little crate in the kitchen. Sometimes she’ll need to retreat and relax or get away from little kids or excessive noise. Make sure she has a place that’s off limits to the kids or other pets for those times when she really needs it.
