Harmful Plant for Cats

Everyday, thousands of cats face a danger that most pet owners tend to overlook. There are several varieties of houseplants that can be deadly to cats. Yes, that´s right, house plants like flowers, those beautiful flowers you treasure, may be hazardous to your cat´s health. It is imperative that you take the time to research this matter in detail but we will list a few of the more common ones here.

  1. Lilies, in all varieties, are dangerous to your cat. Cat´s love to nibble and chew on things. The colorful leaves of a lily are irresistible to many cats. When ingested by your cat, Lilies can cause kidney failure. It may take a few hours before your cat starts vomiting and becomes lethargic if he eats a Lily. He may also lose his appetite.

  2. Another plant your cat may find himself drawn to is the Autumn Crocus. When ingested, the Crocus can cause a number of problems. It is common to find bloody vomiting, diarrhea, shock, liver failure, kidney failure, and bone marrow suppression among cats that have ingested this plant.

  3. Poinsettias are also poisonous to your cat, but usually not as deadly. If ingested, Poinsettias can cause mild gastric problems. Your cat may suffer nausea or vomiting. Usually, this doesn´t require a vet visit, but should be avoided at all costs.

What should you do if you suspect your cat has been eating the houseplants? Call your vet immediately. With the proper information, your vet can treat the cat for poisoning and observe him for any further problems. If you don´t know exactly what type of plant your cat has ingested, take a sample to the nearest plant nursery to find out for sure. Do not wait to see if your cat shows signs of poisoning.

Also make sure to have plenty of treats for your cat to nibble on instead of your plants. Also, consider growing your cat some greens of his own. He'll love it, and your plants will thank you.
