How Often to Feed Your Cat

How often you feed your cat depends on a number of things. First, you must consider that at different ages, your cat will need different nutrients in different amounts. It is important to realize that over feeding your cat can be as detrimental to his health as under feeding him. You should use the following guidelines to determine how much to feed your cat.

  1. You should check with your vet before starting or stopping any new regime of feeding. Most kittens need to have food in their bowls at all times. They need to eat until they are full and go back when they feel hungry again.
  2. Your adult cat should be fed once a day. The amount will depend on his weight, age and especially his activity level. Obviously a house cat will not require as much as a cat that gets outside to exercise on a regular basis.
  3. An older or senior cat will have different needs than that of your kitten and adult cat. His food intake will still depend on his weight but must also be adjusted to his declining activity level. As a senior he will not move around as well as he did when younger; therefore he won´t need as much food to sustain energy. You should make a special appointment to talk to your veterinarian about your cat´s changing needs and if there will be any need for additional nourishment such as vitamins and/or supplement prescriptions.

How often you feed your cat depends on his age, size, and activity level. You should never over or under feed your feline. Talk to your veterinarian about a good brand of food. He can recommend a food that will contain all the essentials your cat needs.
