Vaccinations

If you are just now entering the wonderful world of cats, you are about to discover that cats resemble humans in many ways. Just as a child has to have vaccinations and check-ups so should your cat. Vaccinations are an important part of your cat´s health. There are a number of vaccinations your cat will need. First, let´s look at what shots your baby will be getting when you carry her for her first several check-ups.

  1. One of the most important shots your kitten will receive will be administered in two doses at the ages of 8 weeks and 12 weeks. This is called a 3 and 1. It consists of vaccinations for feline calicivirus, rhinotrachitis, and panleukopenia. These are all feline diseases that are very deadly if not inoculated against.
  2. Other vaccinations also available include rabies, feline leukemia, peritonitis, ringworm, and chlamydia. All of these inoculations are usually administered by 6 months of age. It is always in the best interest of your pet to vaccinate against all of these illnesses. If not inoculated, your cat will be at risk of catching any one of these sicknesses and probably dying. This goes back to the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. " Only if you do not inoculate your cat against these diseases, there is no cure.
  3. Always discuss your felines care with an educated bet. If you cannot afford vet visits check the Internet or local humane society as there area several organizations that help with these vaccinations. Many of them will pay part or the entire bill just to ensure that there are healthy cats out there.

When you consider getting a cat, you must consider vaccinations as a part of the care your pet will require.
