Pet Emergency Prevention

As an animal lover, Pet Emergency Prevention should be one of your priorities. Here’s everything you need to know about the subject.

Preventing Pet Emergencies

Pet Emergency Prevention can begin from the first day you bring your new animal home. Whether it’s a dog, a cat, or a pair of lovebirds, their safety and wellbeing should be of paramount concern. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Pet-proof the house before bringing animals home. If you have a dog or cat, make sure to keep houseplants up out of reach. Hide or disguise electrical wires wherever you can, and tape down the ones you can’t hide. Keep cleaning supplies, chemicals, medications, and alcohol in locked cabinets, or high enough that they’re completely out of reach. Don’t leave food or snacks out where pets will be tempted to give them a taste.

  • Ensure your pet’s safety from other animals or children. If you have a bird, place her cage in an area where the cat won’t be able to reach it. Keep dogs and cats fenced in or on leashes so they’re not antagonized by the other neighborhood animals. Make sure children are taught how to act around your pet so they don’t grab, pull, or tease the animal.

  • Be prepared in case of emergencies. Let’s face it, for all your efforts, accidents can still happen. Plan in advance for emergency situations so you can act calmly and quickly if something occurs. Have emergency vet and animal clinic numbers posted near your phone for quick reference, and write down the directions to the nearest pet hospital so you have them instantly when you need them.
