When bringing home a new pet, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Prepare children on how to treat the new animal, and to give him some space. Children tend to love animals, and their constant attention and noise can stress out an animal who’s not familiar with them. Make sure children stay quiet and calm around the new puppy or cat, and that they don’t chase after him upon his arrival.
Let your pet explore his surroundings on his own. You don’t have to leave him unattended, but you should allow him to get down and walk around the house as he wants to. Don’t force him into his crate right at first, and don’t drag him around from room to room on a leash. Simply let him sniff and explore on his own, and he will quickly become accustomed to the area.
If you have other animals, don’t force them together immediately. They will both need time to get used to each other, and they could end up fighting if they are forced. Let the older pet stay the dominant one, and be sure to give that pet a lot of attention and time so it doesn’t get jealous of the new little one.
