Small Pet Safety

Keeping small petssafe is easy if you understand potential dangers. Here's what you need to know about Small Pet Safety.

In the Cage

Keep your little pet in a cage that is large enough for him to climb and move around but don't give him any opportunities to fall from high spots. Small animals have been known to break bones during falls. Choose an exercise wheel that offers a solid running surface and is built into the cage or at least doesn't have any supports spanning the opening of the wheel. Little legs and tails can get caught in rung-style wheels. Inspect your pet's cage regularly to remove any food that's gotten wet and started to mold. If you offer your pet fresh fruit and veggies, remove it within 24 hours if he loses interest. Keep his cage away from drafts and out of direct sunlight.

Outside the Cage

Letting your pet out to roam is fun and a great way to provide more opportunities for healthy exercise, but it's important to be diligent about keeping him safe. Run the vacuum cleaner around the house before letting your small animal roam. You never know what he mind find and decide to gnaw on. A stray pill or chocolate chip can mean disaster for your pet. Conceal all cords and cables to keep him from chewing them. If you bring him outside, make sure he doesn't nibble on any pants that have been treated with pesticides. Taking a few simple steps can go a long way toward keeping your pet safe.
