Socializing a cat while it’s still a kitten will have wonderful and long-lasting positive effects on that cat’s life. Socialization is simply teaching a kitten not to fear new people, other animals, and unknown environments. When a cat is exposed to many new, non-threatening situations at an early age, she will learn that the world is not a place to fear, and that the unknown doesn’t mean only negative things.

The key in socialization is positive experiences. You want to introduce your kitten to new things, but only things that will be positive and good for her. Frightening her early on may cause phobias or aggression as she gets older. Remember that she’s very impressionable and the experiences she has as a kitten will be remembered throughout her life, for good or ill.

Cats who weren’t properly socialized as kittens will exhibit various symptoms, including aggression, extreme fear or shyness, and constant hiding. If an adult cat lacks proper socialization, it will probably take a professional or a very patient owner to help her develop the skills necessary to handle life’s circumstances.

As well as introducing your kitten to new people and other animals, she should become accustomed and comfortable with being touched and groomed. This will help you throughout her life when she doesn’t constantly fight you (or the vet) when you’re trying to make her presentable.
