Reptile Litter Training

Believe it or not, there are a few reptiles out there that can be litter trained. Here's what you need to know about Reptile Litter Training.

Can You Really Litter Train a Reptile?

Most reptiles will never be potty trained. But if you have a smart, well-socialized iguana that often has the run of the house, or a portion of it, it's worth a try. Iguanas are clean animals and creatures of habit, which makes the job of potty training a little easier. Note that it's important not to use actual litter in the litter box or tub because the animal may try to ingest it. Use paper or some other absorbent material that will stay intact instead.

The first thing you need to do is pay attention to your pet's toileting habits. When does he usually go the bathroom each day? As long as you're feeding him the say time each day he will defecate roughly the same time too. Place your iguana in its toileting area and keep him there until the mission is accomplished. Be patient, it takes a while to get the message across. You will have to repeat this process many, many times before it becomes a habit for your reptile. But just think of how much time you'll save not having to clean up after your pet!

Some iguana owners claim to have successfully toilet trained their iguanas. This requires a special cage-like structure to be placed over the toilet and lots of patience. It may take many weeks to completely toilet train your pet.
