Proper nutrition is essential to your pet's good health. Here's what you need to know about Small Pet Nutrition.
Food Choices
Commercial mixes are the easiest way to ensure your pet is getting all the nutrition he needs. Each small animal's diet requirement varies though, so take care to purchase a mix that's specially formulated for your pet's species. Guinea pigs and gerbils don't eat the same things in the same quantities. Stick with a well-known brand from a reputable source and you'll be in good shape. Take care that your pet isn't just picking out all the tasty nuts and seeds and leaving the rest. The high fat content in seeds and nuts can turn your pint-sized pet into a little porker. If your pet has a penchant for peanuts, try removing the nuts from every other food ration to encourage him to eat a healthier mix. The package label should give you an idea of the quantity of food your pet needs. Just remember that many small animals like to hoard their food away so it may look like he's eaten it all when in reality he's got it buried for safe keeping. Make sure fresh water is available at all times.
Treats
Supplement the commercial diet with bits of fruit and vegetables for added nutrition and fiber and just because it's a fun way to bond with your pet. Don't offer too much, though, as overdoing the fresh produce can cause diarrhea. Pet stores sell treats and tidbits too or you can treat your pet to a bit of dog biscuit for added protein. Be sure to check the cage regularly for any bits of food that are left and discard them before they spoil.
