Read About Bird Songs

ImageBird songs are pleasing to listen to and are a very important part of communication for birds. Here’s everything you need to know about bird songs.

Bird songs have multiple purposes

All animals make noises. They make them when they’re happy, when they’re sad, when they’re scared, when they’re in pain and when they feel threatened. Birds use their bird songs as a communication tool between themselves, their families and the birds they live around.

Birds actually communicate with humans, if you can believe it, though the way a bird communicates with a human is usually considered a squawk or a nag rather than bird songs. Have you ever noticed a group of birds go absolutely nuts when you get too close to them or when you go outside? When they get loud, it’s because they’re warning you to stay away from them. They’re also telling the other birds that danger is near.

How do birds make songs?

Birds are unique because their anatomy allows them to make two different noises at once so they can essentially make the sound of two birds. They have a syrinx, which is like a human sound box but much more diverse. They’ll make one tone with one side and another with the other side, which allows them to create bird songs that sound like more than one bird is actually singing.

How does a bird pick the song it sings?

There’s no real answer to how bird songs are created. Scientists have studied birds and their songs, but there isn’t one concrete universal reason as to why these little guys make the bird songs they do.

Some of it is based on environment. Some birds are prone to short quick bird songs while others fancy long notes. Bird songs are also affected by how many sounds a bird can make. Some birds will make three sounds while others make more than 10. Bird songs really depend on the species of bird and the communication that the bird is trying to convey.

Imitating bird songs

Listen closely to the birds that wake you up on spring and summer mornings and you’ll develop an ear for that type of bird. With technology what it is today, it’s very easy to get on-line and find the bird that’s singing outside of your window by listening to audio recordings of different bird songs. Perhaps if you can whistle and have a good ear, you can make some imitations of your own bird songs!
