Read About Choosing Dog Toys

A little bit of creative thinking can go a long way in helping you get the right toys for your dog, and the most enjoyment out of playtime for both of you.

Things to consider: The dog's interests, stopping destructive behavior, and introducing him to new toys.

  • Making the Right Choices - Dog toys are as vast and varied in form and function just like toys for kids. For the most mileage of out the toys you invest in for your dog, pay attention to your dog's interests -- tugging, running, chewing, chasing, pulling. Beyond that, does he like rubber or plush? Hard or soft? Food-filled or squeaky? You will save a lot of money on unused toys if you keep your dog's preferences (and not yours) in mind when you go shopping.

  • They're out of Here - To discourage your dog from destroying her toys, you must throw them out the instant she makes a hole or a tear in it, chews part of it off, or pulls out the stuffing. If you don't, she'll learn to think it's perfectly okay to destroy her dog toys.

  • Your Mark of Approval - To get your dog interested in new toys that don't initially seem to do it for her, try getting your scent all over them and giving it another try. Rub them between your palms for a while before you give them back to her or, even better, spend a night or two sleeping with your dog's new dog toys.
