This is a very important decision you should make for your cat and you should take some time and choose a food that will help him remain healthy and active. Do you know what to look for? Take a few moments to look over the following tips so you can be prepared the next time you go to the store to purchase cat food. When you are selecting cat food, check the labels for the following:
- Make sure the pet food is in compliance with the requirements of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). This means that the pet food is complete and balanced. Pet food manufacturers are not allowed to bear the AAFCO guarantee unless very specific nutrient criteria are met.
- The protein source should be the first ingredient listed, especially in canned foods. The source should be named specifically. You should not accept anything less because protein is one of the most important ingredients of your cat´s diet.
- Generic pet foods only meet the basic requirements which are not always healthy. You should also always check the expiration date on the can. You want a quality, fresh food for your cat.
You do not want to spend money on food that is almost out of date or even already outdated. Keep in mind you should get what you pay for.
