Read About Bird Safe Wood

Bird seed is a good way to attract birds to your house while excluding less desirable birds from taking over your backyard. Here’s everything you need to know about bird seed.

What to look for in bird seed

People put out bird seed, either by putting it in a feeder or tossing on the ground, because they want to attract birds to their yard. Now, while any seed you toss out will probably attract something be it blackbirds, chickadees or squirrels, you need to learn about the birds in your backyard if you want to get a nice array of birds.

Regardless of what kind of bird you’re trying to attract with your bird seed, there are a couple of things to keep in mind regardless of who you want to attract with your seed. Remember to place the seed in a dry area so it doesn’t mold; never ever give a bird chocolate because it’s a toxic substance for birds; and do not give birds seed that has been sitting in your house or basement for a long time because it might be moldy. Mold is toxic to birds.

Once you’ve figured out what kind of birds you can attract and which ones you want to attract, you need to examine which kind of bird seed will get the birds you want.

Types of bird seed

One of the best types of bird seed to give your winged visitors is the black-oil sunflower seed. This seed is meaty, which means it has a lot of nutritional substance and is also high in fat. Black-oil sunflower bird seed is good for large birds and can also be managed by little birds. Other kinds of sunflower seeds are difficult for little birds to crack.

Suet is good for enticing insect-eating birds to your feeder. Suet can be mixed with all kinds of bird seed and placed in a feeder or in a dish. Birds like suet because it’s essentially an animal fat, they enjoy the taste and are attracted by the smell. Be careful if you use this because if it’s mixed in water and it gets warm, it can become quite gross and toxic to the bird. Grit is a substance that can also be added to your bird seed. Birds chew their food when it gets to their gizzard. Grit makes it easier for them to do this.

Birds will eat a variety of substances, but if you want the right bird seed for the birds in your backyard, make an inquiry at your local pet store. You can put things other than bird seed in your yard such as fruits and grains, and see how the birds react.
