Using A Car Barrier. If your dog enjoys the occasional car ride, or you like to bring him on vacations with the family (a common occurrence these days) then you need to consider how safe your dog will be in the car. He should have place to rest comfortably and be protected from slips and sudden stops. The closer the environment is to his den at home, the happier he will be and the more successful your traveling with him will be as well. Bring his favorite chew toys and comfortable bedding when setting up his area for long trips.
Restraining Your Dog
Installing a Dog Car Barrier in the back of your SUV of minivan is a good way to restrain your dog to a single area of your car. This is useful in protecting your dog from flying through the vehicle if he's in the car when you get in a crash, and also gives him his own space where he will refrain from going potty on long car rides.
Choosing Tubular or Mesh Barriers
There are mainly two choices in Dog Car Barriers. There is a tubular piece you can buy that easily attaches to your vehicle behind the back seat so your dog essentially has a cage in the rear end of your vehicle. It prevents the dog from roaming the car while it's moving and is strong enough to keep him in the back if anything should happen. This is a good choice for larger breeds, such as the German Shepherd, St. Bernard and Siberian Husky who can't fit in the typical dog carriers.
The other choice is a mesh barrier. These are sturdy cloth barriers that create a safe environment for your dog. They are easy to install and are more comfortable for the dog than the tubular barriers. This type of barrier can also be used behind the driver's seat to crate an effect like that of a taxi. The dog would then have more mobility in the car, but would be restricted from the front seat. Used in conjunction with a dog car mat, it is a feasible solution to restraining your dog without the risk of ruining your car seats and floor.
