Tank and Equipment

The first thing you'll need to do is chose the size of the aquarium tank. Consider where you're going to place it (remember: no direct sunlight, and don't put it right under or over a heating and air conditioning vent or you're asking for trouble). Keep in mind that aquariums are extremely heavy. A specially designed aquarium stand is your best choice for support. Make sure an aquarium hood is included.

Once you decide on the size you'll need to purchase gravel at one pound per gallon and a filtration system. Be sure to choose a filter that's powerful enough to be effective in the size tank you're starting. If your aquarium tank doesn't come equipped with a filter you'll need to buy one separately.

Set Up

First install the filter plate and then add the gravel (well-rinsed in a colander first) and spread it along the bottom. Fill the tank to one inch below the rim. Get your filter going, attach the heater and thermometer and add any plants or decorations. Wait a few hours, check that everything's working well and add dechlorinator. After a day or so, if everything still looks good, it's time to add your fish! Start with two or three. Research and/or ask lots of questions about what type of fish get along well and how to feed them.
