Freshwater Fish Nutrition

Good nutrition is a big part of keeping your fish happy and healthy. Here's what you need to know about Freshwater Fish Nutrition.

The Basics

Before you choose your fishy friends, be sure to find out what they need to eat and how often. It's important to understand if your fish are carnivores (meat-eaters), herbivores (plant and algae-eaters) or omnivores (eat both). You don't want to be taken by surprise when your aquarium plants or even your little fishy friends start disappearing. Once you figure out what and how much to feed each fish and whether they're compatible with each other and their surroundings, there are some other things to consider about favorable fish feeding.

Feeding Tips

Feed your fish small amounts of food several times per day instead of feeding them just one large meal each day. Uneaten food contaminates the tank and may clog your filter. Frequent feedings increase food consumption resulting in a cleaner, healthier tank. Avoid too much of a good thing. Overfeeding can result in lots of fish funerals. Watch your fish when they're eating to ensure that everyone's partaking of the feast. If a fish is not eating, you need to figure out why fast. Give the pet shop a call and see if someone can help you solve the problem. Offer as much variety in their diets as you can and make sure any live food you drop in the tank is clean so you don't introduce disease and parasites. Proper nutrition will yield happier, livelier, more colorful fish.
