Rabbits

Rabbits are a popular pet choice for small animal lovers, especially families with young children. Here's everything you need to know about raising Rabbits.

Varieties of Rabbits

More thanImage 50 species of rabbits exist, but the European Rabbit or domestic Rabbit is the source of all the numerous pet breeds. Popular breeds include the French Lop and the Netherlands Dwarf.

Physical Characteristics of Rabbits

Rabbits are classified as small mammals in the pet world and rank high in popularity. Size varies a great deal between breeds with adults as small as 10 inches long for some breeds or as long as 31 inches for others. Adult weight ranges from 2 pounds to 20 pounds, again depending on the breed. ImageMost Rabbit breeds have life spans of 5 to 10 years with some reportedly living as long as 15 years. If you decide to adopt a rabbit, be prepared to take care of him as a long-standing part of the family.

Behavior of Rabbits

Rabbits generally sleep most of the day and become active in the early morning and early evening hours. They are usually calm and good-natured and make good pets, although they can become aggressive if they feel threatened. Male rabbits, also called bucks, will generally fight if kept together, but neutering is available for Rabbits and should result in companionable living. Females, also called does, will live companionably with other Rabbits, but the best results are always achieved if the Rabbits are raised together.
