Gerbils are susceptible to seizure conditions and nasal dermatitis, while wet tail disease is typically the biggest problem with hamsters. All animals in the rodent family are susceptible to oral problems like overgrown incisors and cheek teeth. They require plenty of items to gnaw on to ensure their teeth are the correct length.

Zoonotic diseases are diseases that can potentially be transmitted to humans from animals. Small pets can transmit various bacteria, fungi, and parasites to people, but in most cases these aren't any different than what dogs and cats can carry. The most common zoonotic diseases are ringworm, tapeworm, sarcoptic mange, and salmonellosis.
