Small Pet Diseases Conditions

Veterinary care is increasingly available for small animals. Here's everything you need to know about Small Pet Diseases and Conditions.

General Small Pet Diseases and Conditions

As with any animal, small animals may suffer from a variety of conditions throughout their life cycles. Animals that are bred to be pets and kept indoors are much less likely to contract bacterial and viral diseases, although it does happen, particularly when cages and living areas aren't kept clean enough. Various types of kidney, intestinal, respiratory, and oral diseases can also occur with small pets. Antibiotics and other treatment options are available through experienced small mammal vets.

Specific Examples of Small Pet Diseases and Conditions

Tyzzer's disease affects the liver and intestines in a variety of small mammals and can prove fatal. Mice and rats are susceptible to mammary cancer and respiratory diseases, and one of the most common diseases for rabbits is a respiratory infection called snuffles. Gerbils are susceptible to seizure conditions and nasal dermatitis, while wet tail disease is typically the biggest problem with hamsters. All animals in the rodent family are susceptible to oral problems like overgrown incisors and cheek teeth. They require plenty of items to gnaw on to ensure their teeth are the correct length.

Can My Small Pet Make Me Sick?

Zoonotic diseases are diseases that can potentially be transmitted to humans from animals. Small pets can transmit various bacteria, fungi, and parasites to people, but in most cases these aren't any different than what dogs and cats can carry. The most common zoonotic diseases are ringworm, tapeworm, sarcoptic mange, and salmonellosis.
