Small Pet Medications

Veterinary care and medications are increasingly available for small animals. Here's everything you need to know about Small Pet Medications.

Small Pet Diseases and Conditions

Just like any other animal, small pets are susceptible to various medical problems. Bacterial and viral infections can occur, but they aren't a big problem as long as dietary needs are met and cages and living areas are kept sanitary and clean. Common conditions in small pets include kidney, intestinal and respiratory diseases. Animals in the rodent family are particularly susceptible to oral conditions from overgrown incisors and cheek teeth and require plenty of chewing material to gnaw on to avoid problems.

Types of Medications

As veterinary care has expanded for small animals, more and more medications have become available for a variety of problems. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for bacterial infections, but it is very important that pet owners visit an experienced small animal veterinarian before administering any antibiotics. Antibiotic-associated entiritis (enterotoxemia) can occur in small animals when antibiotics kill all the good bacteria in the digestive tract, leaving only the bad. An experienced small animal vet will know which antibiotics are the safest. Dehydration is a significant risk with such small animals, and both subcutaneous fluids and anti-diarrheal medications are available. A variety of medications are available for common diseases like ringworm, tapeworm, sarcoptic mange, and salmonellosis.

You can find a range of Small Pet Medications at online pet stores, or in your local pet shop. Be sure to follow dosage and administration instructions carefully.
